List of hotels

We have talked to several hotels in Mexico City. Participants can make their own reservations, or ask the organizers to make the reservations for them, indicating which hotel and the length of stay.

There have been several suggestions to look for hotels in the South of the City, close to the subway line, particularly in the area called Coyoacan. Unfortunately, Coyoacan is a protected residential area and there are no hotels there. There are also no hotels close to the subway line except all the way up to the center of the City. We have therefore made a choice of a few hotels, two of them in central Mexico City and two in the South closer to UNAM. The prices indicated are in pesos, and the exchange rate is roughly 11 pesos for 1 US dollar.

  • Hotel El Diplomatico (tel. +(5255) 55 63 60 66)
Single: 710 pesos; Double: 710 pesos. Does not include breakfast. Please indicate that you're attending a workshop at the UNAM to get the special rate.

Location: Av. Insurgentes Sur 1105 (South).
The hotel is located about 15-20 min. by car from the UNAM campus.

Advantages: Not too expensive. Close to UNAM, and located in a very nice area.

Disadvantages: Far from tourist attractions. Also, far from subway, so you need to take a taxi to get to UNAM.

  • Hotel Insur (tel. +(5255) 55 13 37 38)
Single: 580 pesos; Double 695 pesos. Does not include breakfast.

Location: Av. Insurgentes Sur 4265 (South).
The hotel is located about 15 min by car form the UNAM campus.

Advantages: Reasonable price. Close to UNAM.

Disadvantages: Far from tourist attractions. Also, far from subway, so you need to take a taxi to get to UNAM. A bit noisy also.

  • Hotel Maria Cristina (tel. +(5255) 55 66 96 88)
Single: 665 pesos; Double 735 pesos. Does not include breakfast.

    Location: Rio Lerma 31 (Downtown).
Far from campus, and not terribly close to a subway station either.

Advantages: Not too expensive and very nice (it has been highly recommended). It is located in the central area of Mexico City, close to the "Zona Rosa" (Pink Zone). The Zona Rosa is not a Red light district, it is rather a place with a lot of night life, restaurants, bars, etc.

Disadvantages: Not that easy to get to UNAM. Either take a taxi the whole way, or take a taxi to the nearest subway station (Insurgentes Station, but you will have to change trains). The other possibility is to walk a few blocks to Insurgentes Avenue and take a bus down to UNAM which is in fact in Insurgentes itself, but Insurgentes is a long road.

  • Hotel Ambassador (tel. +(5255) 55 18 01 10)
Single: 310 pesos; Double: 370 pesos. Does not include breakfast.

    Location: Humbolt 38 (Downtown).
The hotel is far from the UNAM campus, but near from Juarez Metro Station (around the block). By metro it takes 30-40 minutes to the UNAM campus.

Advantages: Cheap. It is located in downtown Mexico City, close to main tourist attractions. Also, it is very close to the metro station so getting to UNAM is very easy.

Disadvantages: Cheap (so not particularly nice, but most people stayed there last time). The subway is extremely crowded early in the morning.

  • Hotel San Francisco (tel. +(5255) 55 21 89 60)
Single: 400 pesos; Double: 450 pesos. Does not include breakfast.

    Location: Luis Moya 11 (Downtown).
The hotel is far from the UNAM campus, but near from Juarez Metro Station (about 4 blocks away). By metro it takes 30-40 minutes to the UNAM campus.

Advantages: Reasonable price. It is located in downtown Mexico City, close to main tourist attractions. Somewhat nicer than Ambassador too. Also, it is close to the metro station so getting to UNAM is very easy.

Disadvantages: The subway is extremely crowded early in the morning.
